At

for One Mango Tree since 2008, during which she has been able to pay her
grandchildren’s school fees. She is participating in One Mango Tree’s savings
and loan program in order to buy an animal and save for future school fees. She
enjoys riding the bicycle that she received from One Mango Tree. Irene would love to learn how to make dresses.
Over the years of working in Gulu, we've had to embrace flexibility and change to keep things moving along. We've moved from a tiny market stall, to a series of workshops, to working under one roof. At the end of 2011, we started a new program - work-from-home - which provided the ladies with their sewing machine (now their own asset) and allows them to return to their villages, supplement their income and spend time with their families and gardens.

Anena
Betty is 25 years old and has three children. Since she started work at One
Mango Tree, she has begun to earn money for food, school fees and clothes for her
children. Anena Betty says that he biggest problem in her village is that people
drink too much alcohol because there are not enough opportunities for
employment. Anena Betty wishes to own and operate her own clothing shop one
day, and is saving money to buy land. She also hopes to enroll in computer
classes.
Word spreads quickly in Uganda, and when we heard that TK Maxx was
looking for producer partners, we were thrilled. TK Maxx is TJ Maxx,
just on the other side of the Atlantic. With more than 300 stores in the
UK and Europe, they bring designer goods to the masses with budget
prices. We had a TJ Maxx in my hometown, and I remember scouring the
racks, searching for treasure.
